  • The Process of Splf-Propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS) is reviewed as a method for the preparation of high temperature materials. A broad description of the fundamental aspects of this process is provided along with a historical account of its utilization in materials synthesis. Advantages and limitations of the process are discussed with specific reference to selected classes of materials. The use of the SHS process to produce dense bodies is described.
